Memphis Public Libraries is partnering with The City of Memphis to host a historic Juneteenth Financial Literacy Summit, commemorating the final fight for freedom. This fight, referenced by Dr. King in his final days on earth, was not only for civil rights but also for "silver" rights and equal access to information and economic opportunities for people of color. It aimed to provide them with the means to work equitably to improve their economic circumstances. Initially promised following Juneteenth, this fight for economic empowerment included the promise of 40 acres and a mule, which was later repealed and replaced with strategic laws and compromises that crippled the black economy for generations. Through strategic programming and free continued education, the Dream Summit aims to positively change the economic trajectory of families and generations of Memphians.
