Message from Jasmine McCaskill

November 02, 2020

On Oct. 9, I launched the crowdfunding campaign for my senior thesis film at  Spelman College  , HOMECOMING. 21 days later, the film became 100% funded. There aren’t many times when I lack words to describe the condition of my heart, but Friday will definitely be marked in my archive. To my friends, family, campus community, HBCU family, and strangers who have financially contributed to this work, I thank you. Thank you for seeing this as good ground to pour into. I am glad that the fruit that is my former projects proved it as such. This moment will be in my remembrance forever. Now, it’s up and onward. God took the limits off. You’ll see in the spring.

We are almost to the goal!

October 24, 2020

Just want to take a moment and share some raw footage from HOMECOMING that’s going in the archives. Friday, I visited my alma mater, DeSoto Central High School, and shot some of my first scenes of my thesis film at the annual Homecoming game.

I haven’t stepped foot on the campus since I graduated three years ago. But I walked up to what is now the student section, introduced myself and the film, and the conversation from that point on was history. I do not know these boys personally. Matter of fact, I didn’t even get their names. But they allowed me to film them. The first take was a little performative, so I stopped rolling and asked them to just be themselves. This is what I got. Simple, yet beautiful Black boy joy while watching their friends play football. I hope that they know just how valuable they are — in their classroom and community. God, please protect their peace in the spaces they enter that are too ignorant to behold all of them. Always remind them that their lives and their stories really do matter.

My thesis film is now 92% funded. Thank you for your contributions.  Visit https://bit.ly/3dZFr2j to donate!
